Chapter Fifteen

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that time-travelling Christmas ghosts will never show up when you’re sitting at the kitchen table with your mates, stuffing your face full of mince pies.

In my very limited experience so far, they preferred to get you alone. So, after we’d all finished our dinner, Luke and Leia tidied away the plates, and I had the perfect excuse to duck out of the washing up.

“I’d love to stay and help, but... you know, time-travelling Christmas ghosts and everything...”

Luke stood at the kitchen sink, up to his elbows in hot water and bubbles. “You’ll say anything to get out of housework.”

I grabbed a handful of his bubbles, blew them at his face, then ran off...

The suspects had made the dining room their main space now, and I could hear their voices chattering from there as I strolled into the hallway. But yikes! I managed to cast the Invisibility spell just in time, as I saw Troy and Malcolm huddled together by the front door.

The Invisibility spell required me to hold my breath so, with my cheeks bulging, I strained to listen.

Malcolm was in the middle of speaking. “... but I’ve known you a long time, Troy, so I knew you’d figure it out. Where’s the... goods?”

Troy held up his keyring. “In the car.”

Malcolm started to reply, but they both froze as the dining room door swept open and Kashmira strode into the hallway.

She halted as she saw the two men. “Oh...”

Malcolm spoke loudly. “Ahem, so I’ll just go to the cellar and grab you that special jam, young Troy. I’m sure you’ll love this flavour!”

Kashmira watched Malcolm head to the cellar. As soon as he was out of sight, she and Troy held eye-contact for a second, then they rushed to each other’s arms.

“Oh my darling,” Troy whispered, hugging her tightly. “I’ve thought of nothing but you since Paris.”

Kashmira broke the hug. “Are you really going to work for Greater Good Jam in the New Year? Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Well, why didn’t you tell me you worked there?”

“I told you I was an office manager... You told me you lived in London!”

He ran his fingers through her long red hair. “I do... Look, Kashmira, something terrible has happened.”

“Yes, Nigel’s been stabbed to death!”

“But I mean... something else.”

“I can’t believe this is happening!”

As Kashmira buried her face in her hands, she stumbled as if the ground was shifting. But the ground was fine. She must be feeling faint.

Troy steadied her with strong hands. “Oh, my darling, sit down if you’re dizzy.”

As she sunk into his arms, he lowered her to the floor, placing his palm across her forehead. “You have a slight temperature, Kash. Lie down and I’ll put you in the recovery position.”

She remained sitting. Her voice was choked with emotion. “You’re going to break up with me, aren’t you?”

“I don’t want to.” Troy lowered his voice. “Look, there’s something about me you need to know. I’m not–”

Gah! Jager made me jump as he came whistling into the hallway.
